Kenny Rogers, pine tarred and feathered. But the humour is hearing Yankees fans go apoplectic about their loss to the Gambler and demanding some sort of restoration of the Yankees' Rightful Place *cough*JasonGiambiWhiteyFord*cough*.

(Speaking of humour, too soon with the Cory Lidle jokes?)

So the Tigers steamroll into the World Series with the 4-0 sweep of Oakland. It's funny how much Mark Kotsay's comments reflect Billy Beane's "my shit doesn't work in the playoffs" - except more erudite:
"There's a thing called the chaos theory, where you just can't control certain things," Athletics outfielder Mark Kotsay said. "We had no control. We did our best. There wasn't a lack of effort, just a lack of execution."
Is it weird that the ALCS and NLCS were Tigers, As, Cardinals, Mets? It's like going back to the 80s...

So weird - was listening to the Mike and the Mad Dog recording of Lidle's call-in, where it got so bad I was almost feeling sorry for Lidle... and then this happens a couple of days later. Alan Schwarz has a pretty good, eerie write-up of Lidle.

Schadenfreude's all I got left for this season, and a fifth year of seeing the Yankees lose to a wild card team fulfilled it in spades. Welcome to Atlanta Braves territory, Joe Torre.

Plus, the Tigers really are fun to watch - how could anyone not root for them? Young'uns revive a team that not too long ago was a 119-loss team; Kenny Rogers seeking redemption for past failure; the Temptations singing. Motown, baby. Ain't no mountain high enough...

So the Purge begins. Wallace gets fired, no surprise, and so does Papa Jack. My general sense is that Wallace was never a good coach for young'uns, and with Papelbon, Lester (when he comes back), Delcarmen etc. coming up that did not bode well for his position. Perhaps it's telling that in the end Wallace "received expressions of support from Schilling, Mike Timlin, Tim Wakefield, and Jason Varitek" - all veterans long in the tooth.
