Singapore Sox Fan: November 2005 Archive

Yes, Singapore Sox Fan has not been updating much - largely because work commitments will be flinging me into London and Montreal for the next three weeks, and since it's the offseason I will take the occasion to take a slight break... meanwhile my main blog will keep chugging along.

But just a quick word in to say: I don't really mind that A-Rod won the AL MVP - and that he's won it at 2 positions (and not easy ones to play at that) is actually pretty impressive. His comments though are so filled with self-import:
"We can win three World Series; with me, it's never going to be over. I think my benchmark is so high that no matter what I do, it's never going to be enough, and I understand that"
Big Papi's rings: 1... A-Rod's: 0. I also thought this was reflective of A-Rod's "I have to carry the team approach"...
"My one regret is I thought I could have walked 10 or 12 times and really just passed the baton and been a little bit more patient," he said. "Probably at the end, I got a little overanxious."
That lovely GIDP near the end of the Yankees' 2005 season... brilliant.

You know, I was all ready to write something about the rumours that Theo may be coming back to town (sans gorilla mask), but I think the Soxaholix take on it pretty much sums it all up.

Former Sox pitcher Ugie Urbina is arrested for attempted murder. Wow - it's pretty shocking, regardless of the question of guilt.

And I know it's a wire story, and written in classic inverted-pyramid style, but it still seems very odd to even mention his record ("The 31-year-old Urbina has a 44-49 record with 237 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 11 seasons"), as though it shed any light on the case.

Curt Schilling weighs in on the Theo negotiations on SoSH:
This F'in sucks to all F'in hell.
And BTW, a few of you were spot on in what you think happened. Which means you few, and Maz knew what the hell was happening..............
Which really isn't saying anything new, of course - it was already clear from their initial reactions that Schilling and Tek, at least, were really hit badly by Theo's deparature.

The Theo negotiations kind of reminded me of the Pedro ones - low-balled near the start, only meeting demands near the end. Let's see if the Sox spin machine now makes Theo out to be overly demanding, a la Pedro and Manny.

So, one thing about the Theo not signing thing that seems to have arisen is that Larry Lucchino has come across so badly that (hopefully) people might realise the whole media-spin slurs on Manny and Pedro are just that. The Sox let a Hall of Fame pitcher go in one year, and the first GM to win the Sox a World Series in 86 years go the next, and so maybe it's hoping against hope, but please, keep the Hall of Fame hitter.

I don't doubt there are other talented GMs out there. But - to join in the Internet echo chamber - screw you, Larry Lucchino.

The loss of Theo Epstein is pretty hard to bear... and disappointingly of course I predict the standard spin about him being a malcontent may arise once he leaves. Fare thee well, Theo, and all the best - and thank you for 2004, and for 3 years in the playoffs.
