The 2012 Olympics

Incidentally, the vote on where the 2012 Olympics will be is being held here in Singapore on July 6. Woohoo! A chance for a first-hand sporting news report.

I thought the Village Voice had a nice piece on the ridiculousness of the project to build a stadium on the West Side. As a good urban economist, I have to question the wisdom of a $2 billion project. Particularly for a football stadium, which gets crowds once weekly as opposed to the more regular flow of a baseball ballpark.

In the West Side of Manhattan Fiasco, one should understand, that the leaders of The Opposition, Cablevision, own Madison Square Gareden, a place with a 99 Year Tax Abatement, on NYC Real Estate Taxes. Cablevision, also owns Radio City Music Hall.
Presently, THE NBA NY Knicks, The WNBA NY Liberty, & (Locked Out)NHL NY Rangers, supposedly, entertain fans there, but none have been competetive, in their leagues, over the past 2 to 3 years(In other words, like The Yankees, they SUCK). Cablevision FEARS competition. They want to be the ONLY Game in town.
The NY Mets, stepped up to the Proverbial Plate, with their Stadium Plan, essentially, the same stadium plan, since 1997. Building of that Stadium, will commence in 2006, in the Shea Stadium Parking Lot, just next to Shea Stadium, The 1st Multi-Purpose Sports Facility, convertible to MLBaseball & Football. But, the place is showing its' age. The Upper Deck is so high up, that one can wave to pilots, on incoming flights to LaGuardia Airport.
The New Design, is based on the Brooklyn Dodgers old home, Ebbets Field, but, more-modernistic. It'll be 45K Seats. For the Olympics, 35K, Pre-Fabbed Seats, will be added, then removed when the Games End. BTW, there will be parking, all around the place.
The Biggest Revenue Sources of these Games, are the American TV Networks, all Hq'd in Manhattan-NYC. This is nothing to sneeze at.
July 6th, should prove to be an interesting day.
If the Games come to NYC, it'll be interesting watching NYC Cabdrivers, cheering for their home countries in person.

As someone with a keen interest in New York's urban planning, I know about the Cablevision thing - I think this is one of the cases where Cablevision acted in pure self-interest but the end result (of not having the stadium built on the West Side) was probably a Good Thing.
