Dave McCarty won't pitch

Dagnabit, Dave McCarty is abandoning the hitter/pitcher experiment:
While the veteran, who pitched three times for the Sox during the 2004 season, will participate in some side sessions, his main task will be to try and make the team as a backup first baseman/outfielder. (Link)
I know it's irrational, but I'm a big fan of two-way players. Plus McCarty had good stats in his 3.2 innings: a lower ERA and a higher K/9 than Pedro and Schilling... heh. Small sample sizes rule.

I was at the blowout at the hands of the Dodgers last season, and by the time McCarty came in to pitch, we'd moved from the bleachers to near home plate. While my buddy was pissed that it had come to that, I was so psyched to see McCarty picth. And he K'd somebody and ended the inning and we all went nuts. It was great. Too bad the experiment is over.

I am oddly disappointed by this news.

It's weird, right? It doesn't make a difference to the team (it's not Troy Brown-level two-way playing), but still, it would be nice.
